The popular software engineer is actively working to put to rest speculations that Google Pay and Apple Pay support XRP, the world’s fourth largest cryptocurrency.
The speculation began to spread following reports that users in 40 countries can now purchase XRP through major payment gateways such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Shortly after, several members of the XRP community amplified the news, suggesting that it may signal subtle support from the two payment giants.
no big deal
However, as the rumors gained traction, community luminary and software engineer Vincent Van Code stepped in to clarify the situation. He stressed that this endorsement claim is misleading and stems from a misunderstanding of how purchasing cryptocurrencies through third-party payment processors actually works.
He also pointed out that the ability to purchase XRP with Google Pay or Apple Pay is not a big deal. Instead, it simply means that certain apps and platforms integrate these payment methods to process standard card transactions, and Vincent points to crypto trading platform Swapped as an example.
XRP enthusiasts have even emphasized that these integrations use standard card processing rails and charge common card or gateway fees. In other words, users are not purchasing XRP directly from Apple or Google, and neither company has expressed support for this asset.
Therefore, he suggests that this payment feature does not mean Apple or Google endorse XRP in an official capacity.
In subsequent comments, he reiterated that claims that Apple Pay supports XRP have been “discarded.” He said that official support from the tech giant would definitely be welcomed, but clarified that the rumors circulating within the community are not true.
Similar support from Uphold
Meanwhile, several cryptocurrency trading platforms now allow users to purchase XRP through Google Pay and Apple Pay. For example, in 2023, cryptocurrency exchange Uphold announced that its Topper service integrated both payment gateways, allowing iOS and Android users to purchase XRP directly through the interface.
Additionally, Uphold is extending this functionality to additional Topper partners and wallet providers, including Xumm, which provides the same functionality that allows users to purchase XRP via Apple Pay and Google Pay. As Vincent made clear, these integrations do not constitute official endorsement of XRP by Google Pay or Apple Pay.
