The U.S. Supreme Court has announced that its next hearing will be held on Tuesday, as a major decision is expected on the tariffs signed by President Donald Trump.
It remains unclear whether this decision, which is attracting attention in the global market, will be announced at this meeting.
As is customary, the court did not announce in advance which case verdicts would be made public. It was said that a verdict could be announced when the justices took the stage at 10 a.m. Washington time.
If a decision on tariffs is not announced next week, the process could be extended for at least another month. Wednesday is the final hearing until February 20, according to the court’s schedule. This means that if the decision is delayed, it could be postponed until the end of February.
The ruling against Trump could deal a severe blow to tariffs, a centerpiece of his economic policy, and is seen as his biggest legal defeat since returning to the White House. The lawsuit centers on the tariffs announced on April 2, known as the “Independence Day” tariffs. They imposed additional tariffs of 10% to 50% on most imports, as well as additional duties on Canada, Mexico, and China in the name of combating illegal trade.
Supreme Court justices expressed doubts during a Nov. 5 hearing about whether Trump has the authority to impose these tariffs under a 1977 law that gives the president special powers in special circumstances. A ruling against Trump could open the door to more than $130 billion in tax refund claims.
