The Coinbase-backed Ethereum Layer 2 network Base resumed block production on Thursday after a roughly two-hour hiatus in which the blockchain went down.
The Base team said in an update that the chain has resumed operation and internal nodes are syncing properly, but that the investigation into the root cause of the incident continues. The team also advised ecosystem node operators to restart their base nodes to restore synchronization.
The issue was first publicly indicated at 16:03 UTC, when Base reported that mainnet block generation was “abnormal.” By 16:52 UTC, the team announced that they had identified the problem and were proceeding with multiple repair efforts.
The incident temporarily halted transaction processing on one of Ethereum’s largest layer 2 networks. Base has not yet disclosed the cause of the invalid block or whether the problem is due to a software bug or another consensus-related failure.
The network previously suffered an outage in August 2025.
The team said it will continue to monitor network stability and provide further updates as the investigation continues.
Details: Base network suffers first downtime since 2023, out of service for 29 minutes
