Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has questioned his ability to remain relevant over the next decade.
During the AMA session on April 23, Hoskinson warned that Ethereum could face a transition of mass users as it places a strain on current structures under scaling pressures and internal inefficiencies.
According to him:
“I don’t think Ethereum will survive for more than 10-15 years. Layertois will continue to suck away all the alpha, people will start fighting, and it will become increasingly difficult for Vitach to be able to defend his willpower.
Hoskinon finds flaws in the Ethereum architecture
He argued that Ethereum’s architecture and governance model creates long-term vulnerability. The founders of Cardano noted that network users are gradually migrating to alternative platforms, especially as Layer 2 (L2) solutions are beginning to dominate network activity.
He said:
“They need to find a way to not make layers parasitic. Unfortunately, I don’t see a way to do that easily. It’s going to be a very hostile divorce to resolve these types of things.”
Hoskinson also criticized Ethereum’s fundamental components, including its proof system, accounting models and virtual machines. He said many of these issues were avoidable and stemmed from decisions made by the Ethereum Foundation despite industry pushbacks.
He added:
“They have the wrong accounting model, they have the wrong virtual machines, they have the wrong consensus model. All of these were self-harmed wounds. People told them not to do it. They did that.
Despite his harsh criticism, Hoskinson welcomed the recent proposal of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin to replace Ethereum Virtual Machine with RISC-V, a more efficient instruction set architecture.
The purpose of this upgrade is to optimize the running layer without interrupting the developer experience.
He described the shift as positive, but emphasized that he believes that technical upgrades alone will not solve Ethereum’s deeper problems. In his view, Ethereum could lag behind a more adaptive network, unless the accounting model has been redesigned.
He said:
“I think it’s a good thing to go to RISC-V. That’s a really good decision that Vitalik makes. That makes a lot of sense. But the accounting model needs to be modified a little too.”
