That’s an argument as old as Bitcoin itself. How can the world’s first cryptocurrency achieve true mass adoption? The Bitcoin community focuses on improving the user experience (UX), but the core Bitcoin developer and CEO of John Carvalho has proposed a simpler solution, deploying custody solutions, fighting lawmakers, and onboarding agency John Carvalho.
Changing Satoshi for Bitcoin may improve your user experience
In the Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP), released in December 2024, Carvalho excludes the term “Satoshi” and argues that removing the decimal point by changing Satoshi for Bitcoin has a double advantage.
Currently, one Bitcoin consists of 100 million small pieces called “base units” or Satosh, which cannot be divided any further. Carvalho’s proposal proposes redefine “Bitcoin” to refer to this smallest unit. In this system, what is currently called “1 Bitcoin” is instead called “100 million Bitcoin.”
For example, a transaction currently displayed as 0.00010000 BTC will be 10,000 Bitcoin on the new system, with 10.23486 BTC displayed as 1,023,486,000 Bitcoin, redefines the concept of Bitcoin Millionaires.
Bitcoiner is famous for being resistant to change.
Bitcoin’s history is filled with controversial debates, from block-sized wars to the ongoing debate over Segwit and NFTs on the blockchain. Naturally, Carvalho’s proposal has met considerable resistance since its introduction at the end of last year. Podcast host Stephen Ribara likened the idea with X, comparing it to calling each slice of pizza to the whole pizza.
“Hey, I have this great idea! Instead of one pizza with eight slices, let’s call each slice pizza. When you order pizza, order eight pizzas instead of one. It’s just my two pizzas.”
Viral Bit founder Daniel Sempa Pico joked:
“I love how your suggestions have caused people.”
Other community members have expressed concern about changing the total supply from 21 million to 2.1 Quadrillion Bitcoin, but they view the original supply as a core principle of Bitcoin’s identity.
“Personally, I’m not interested in changing the supply from 21m to 2.1 quarters. In the endless sea of shit and the unlimited flood of Fiat, 21 million bitcoins are statements, financial debilitating from the middle finger.”
I’ll make Satoshi Bitcoin again
As he posted on X on April 25, 2025, there may be a slight chance that Carvalho’s proposal is growing into people.
“It’s still a minority, but more people are interested in the idea of calling the base unit of Bitcoin and removing the decimals.”
Carvalho appears to be taking part in a full campaign. Borrowing the Trump Magazine slogan, he fills his X-page with pictures of famous figures from the World Economic Community, including Satoshi, Klaus Schwab and Ursula von der Leyen, and the slogan “Making Satoshi Bitcoin.”
It remains to be seen whether the proposal will attract more momentum. However, ongoing debate highlights that even the smallest adjustments make Bitcoin more attractive to the masses.
