Coinbase (COIN) sent users a false “breaking news” alert before the match started that the Norwegian soccer team had defeated Brazil 3-2 in the World Cup finals.
According to the alert, Erling Haaland scored two goals in the match at MetLife Stadium. Coinbase’s own prediction market page still stated at the time that the game was delayed due to weather.
A user posted a screenshot of the notification to X on Sunday. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said he is considering it with his team. One post said the alert was sent at 10:26 a.m. ET. The game didn’t start until 4 p.m.
Max Brandsberg, the company’s head of consumer and business products, later clarified that the incorrect article had been corrected and that the company had “made several updates to avoid this type of inaccuracy in the future.”
“It’s great to see the power of AI-powered 24/7 trading insights, but clearly we need to adjust to address these types of problems,” Brunsberg wrote in X.
In the actual match, Norway defeated Brazil, with Haaland scoring two goals. The final score was 2-1.
