The Pi Network Core Team has set a June 2, 2026 deadline for all mainnet node operators to upgrade to Protocol 24.1, marking another important step in the network’s long-term roadmap.
This update comes immediately after the successful rollout of Protocol 23. This is part of Pi’s gradual progress towards the long-awaited Protocol 26, which many community members believe has the potential to bring significant improvements to smart contracts and ecosystem growth.
What changes in protocol 24.1?
This upgrade focuses on behind-the-scenes network enhancements rather than flashy new features.
According to the Pi Core team, Protocol 24.1 focuses on:
- Improving ledger efficiency
- Enhanced node synchronization
- Preparing your backend infrastructure for future smart contracts
- Streamline future network upgrades
The team emphasized that all nodes must complete the upgrade by June 2 to maintain connectivity to Pi mainnet.
Good news: this upgrade should go smoothly
Unlike the difficult Protocol 23 migration, which required extensive database changes, the migration to Protocol 24.1 is expected to be much easier.
Key highlights include:
- Most migrations complete within 5 minutes
- Windows nodes are automatically updated through Pi Desktop
- Linux operators can use new Pi Linux Node CLI tools
- Docker users just need to deploy the updated container version.
The core team also advised operators to route traffic through backup nodes or Pi’s official API during the upgrade process, rather than upgrading all nodes at the same time.
The community is already looking ahead
Although Protocol 24.1 is primarily an infrastructure upgrade, many Pioneers are focused on what comes next.
Popular Pi community account FireSide highlighted that migrating the node system to Pi RPC and eventually reaching Protocol 26 could significantly improve smart contract development and increase community participation.
The most important thing for a Node system is to convert it to Pi RPC. And please do so if you can.

This discussion is gaining momentum as many users see Protocol 26 as a major milestone in Pi’s long-term ecosystem plans.
Pioneer continues to hold on despite delays
Despite delays surrounding the launch of PiDex and smart contracts, community sentiment has remained relatively resilient. The Pi Core team has revealed that blockchain protocol upgrades and ecosystem product deployments follow separate timelines. This means that smart contracts are not automatically served with protocol 24.1. Instead, the current focus is on strengthening the network’s infrastructure ahead of expanding the larger ecosystem.
As the June 2nd deadline approaches, many long-term Pioneers continue to hold Pi tokens and see this upgrade as an important step toward the next stage of development for the Pi Network.
